Most of the patients referred to a specialized hepatology centre either suffer from decompensation of end stage chronic liver disease or an acute deterioration of known or unknown underlying chronic liver disease. Chronic hepatic decompensation occurs in end- stage cirrhotic patients with progression of their underlying liver disease.
